...Previous Page: Another of the Motivational Poems on Learning
This motivational poem about change below asks the question: Why change?
Why do you want to learn something new?
It may sound obvious, but to learn something new is to place yourself in a situation where you do not know something, and where you are not very good at something. This can feel uncomfortable and there are likely to be times when you feel like giving up.
When you feel like giving up it is important to remember WHY you are learning this. Then you can find the motivation to continue.
“Why?” is a very important question.
Take a moment to get clear on any spiritual or psychological approach you are learning or applying yourself to at the moment and ask yourself why you are learning it?
What do you hope to gain as a result?
Here are some possibilities.
Once you have learned X...
There is a further benefit of getting clear on your motivation for learning.
If, after you have given your approach a try, you find that the benefits are not what you expect you might choose to take a different approach or even give up.
Persevering is a skill. But giving up is a skill too. It's important to recognise if you are putting your energy into learning
something that is not as important to you as something else.
Be sure you find a reason why YOU want to change and learn. Someone else's motivation for you to learn is not enough.
Knowing your motivation for applying yourself to a spiritual or psychological approach is all the more important if you are doing so in the hope of improving a relationship.
This is the subject of the motivational poem below.
In a relationship someone may be treating you badly, yet if you have talked to them to the best of your ability without seeing any change, you may set out to learn approaches to help yourself within that situation.
You might, for example, set out to raise your sense of worth so as to be less affected by their behaviour.
Or you may apply yourself to a spiritual practice in order to find the spiritual gifts within the situation, or just because your spiritual beliefs lead you to believe that it is appropriate to respond in a certain way - for example, with love, forgiveness or blessings.
My book Releasing Judgment (available on this website) shares a forgiveness practice which I applied when I was frustrated by how I was treated when I lived with very severe ME. The simple solution would have been for someone to treat me well! But this solution often wasn't available to me, so I became motivated to find an approach that could help me to find peace regardless.
Why should you be the one to change?
Because between the two of you,
you're in the most pain.
Because you’re the one
with the greatest ability to change.
Because you know God’s way
better than she does.
Give yourself sympathy.
Give yourself credit.
And take the next step you need to take.
Besides, is it your idea of an exciting life
to stay the same way?
Well done for being willing to change in order to stop causing pain to yourself or someone else.
“The ego's plan for salvation centers around holding grievances. It maintains that, if someone else spoke or acted differently, if some external circumstance or event were changed, you would be saved. Thus, the source of salvation is constantly perceived as outside yourself. ...The change of mind necessary for salvation is thus demanded of everyone and everything except yourself.”
