You Can't Forgive On Your Own

You may ask, 'Why can't I forgive?'

As the saying goes “To err is human, to forgive Divine.”

The mistake we often make is trying to forgive on our own.

Do you know how to stop feeling upset with this person or yourself?
No.

Do you want to feel at peace over this issue?
Yes.

The book A Course In Miracles is very clear about how we can't forgive on our own. The following forgiveness quotes share the good news: we are not on our own.

“Let us not delay this, for your dream of hatred will not leave you without help, and Help is here.
Learn to be quiet in the midst of turmoil, for quietness is the end of strife and this is the journey to peace.
Look straight at every image that rises to delay you, for the goal is inevitable because it is eternal.
The goal of love is but your right, and it belongs to you despite your dreams.”
(T-12.II.5)

In A Course In Miracles, another word for forgiveness is 'to undo' - to undo the world of lack and difficulty.  We take back our projections and make space for God's world of love to be revealed.

“The Holy Spirit... must begin His teaching by showing you what you can never learn.... [You] who cannot undo what you have made, nor escape the heavy burden of its dullness that lies upon your mind, cannot see through it.” (T-14.I.4)

We are not supposed to keep a problem for ourselves, or seek to solve it purely through words or actions. 

“Each time you keep a problem for yourself to solve, or judge that it is one that has no resolution, you have made it great, and past the hope of healing... If God is just, then can there be no problems that justice cannot solve. But you believe that some injustices are fair and good, and necessary to preserve yourself.
It is these problems that you think are great and cannot be resolved.
For there are those you want to suffer loss, and no one whom you wish to be preserved from sacrifice entirely.
Consider once again your special function. One is given you to see in him his perfect sinlessness. And you will ask no sacrifice of him because you could not will he suffer loss. The miracle of justice you call forth will rest on you as surely as on him.”
(T-26.II.5-6)

How Important Is Forgiveness In A Course In Miracles?

Forgiveness of someone else is a fundamental teaching of A Course In Miracles.

The benefit of forgiveness of someone is that it allows us to experience self-forgiveness. According to ACIM, self forgiveness - accepting the Atonement for ourselves - is our key assignment.

The following forgiveness quote tells us that to forgive leads us back to knowing ourselves as part of God's love.

“Those who forgive are... releasing themselves from illusions, while those who withhold forgiveness are binding themselves to them.
As you condemn only yourself, so do you forgive only yourself.”
(W-41.1, A Course In Miracles quote)

Notice how that forgiveness quote also explains the following lines in the Our Father prayer:

“Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.”
(Matthew 6:12, Bible verse)

A Course In Miracles says that when we forgive someone we are always forgiving a reflection of ourselves.
When we see the innocence in them, we see our own beauty and innocence.

Forgiveness Prayer Quotes

The following forgiveness quotes are wonderful to use as forgiveness prayer quotes in a situation where you feel annoyance or judgement towards someone:

“I bless you, brother, with the Love of God, which I would share with you.
For I would learn the joyous lesson that there is no love but God's and yours and mine and everyone's.”
(W-127, A Course In Miracles quote)

Also:

“I would see you as my friend, that I may remember you are part of me and come to know myself.”
(W-68, A Course In Miracles quote)

It is well worth learning these forgiveness prayer quotes by heart.

You might like to follow them by saying Amen.

Amen is a powerful word to remind ourselves that we are inviting God to take it from here.
