THE GOD THAT ISN’T
The God that isn't
is in the hospital
following the gurney
that's headed for the operating room.
The God that isn't
is under the car
where the girl is pinned
after the accident.
The God that isn't
is in the trenches of war
alongside the boys
who huddle in fear.
The God that isn't
is on the ceiling
of the darkened bedroom
when you can't sleep.
The God that isn't
is or isn't
depending on where
life finds you.
THE WORD
HE wrote a word on a sheet of paper,
a word that shook and trembled and spoke.
He looked at it and didn't know
how or why or where it came from.
He read it and reread it
though it was but one word
yet it filled him with light
and bliss and joy.
He sat on the grass under a tree
the notepad in his hand
but no other word
would come from his pen
yet his eyes shone like a light
and there was like a halo over his head.
I looked over his shoulder
and the word on his pad
was "God".
GOD KISSED ME
God kissed me when I was born.
Of Course I don't remember
but it gave me life
and made me whole.
He sent me out into this world
confused, without a map,
without a compass or a sense of direction.
And I struggled through the maze
feeling my oats along the way,
bouncing back and forth
between what God gave me
and what the world wanted of me.
I played the game
and rolled the dice
but I didn't know the rules.
Now that the game is almost over
I find my winnings greater than my losses
and see God at the end of the line
waiting to congratulate me
on having run the course
and kiss me again on the way out.

Note from Katherine Owen Thank you, Jay, for your inspirational poems which have put a smile on my face on this spring morning in England.
The first poem THE GOD THAT ISN’T leaves it to the reader to decide if it is a poem of faith or doubt or both.
With the other two spiritual poems you firmly place yourself as a man with faith in god. I love the sharing of both the simplicity and power of the spiritual experience with your poem, THE WORD.
Sweet that you should submit this poem this week.
In church on Sunday, the priest shared an extract from the book, “The cloud of unknowing”. It suggested a meditation time in which a single word, such as the word ‘God’ could be used to “reach out with a naked intent to God with no desire but Himself…. if any should press upon you to ask what you would have, answer it with no other words but this word.”
I love the way you re-frame the life-giving breath of God as a kiss from God. There he is at the beginning and the end of our lives, and all the way through.
With Love to you and all who walk in faith,
Katherine
