This beautiful prayer poem has been written by Richard Hendrick (Brother Richard) at the time of the corona virus in response to lockdown in Ireland.
The poem calls for prayer and love. It holds to the possibility that even in the middle of this tragedy, good can come, positive action can be taken.
Though it doesn't state as much, the poem reminds me of the astonishing spiritual truth shared by Julian of Norwich and by all mystics.
"All is well and all manner of thing shall be well."
Awareness of this truth in no way diminishes the suffering and loss being experienced at this time. The poem recognises both.
The poem is by Richard Hendrick (Brother Richard), Ireland. Written March 13th 2020.
The poem is shared below both as an image and as text.
It is shared without permission, and will be removed speedily if requested by Brother Richard :-)
Many blessings for him and for all who read this.
We are in this together.
Yes there is fear.
Yes there is isolation.
Yes there is panic buying.
Yes there is sickness.
Yes there is even death.
But,
They say that in Wuhan after so many years of noise
You can hear the birds again.
They say that after just a few weeks of quiet
The sky is no longer thick with fumes
But blue and grey and clear.
They say that in the streets of Assisi
People are singing to each other
across the empty squares,
keeping their windows open
so that those who are alone
may hear the sounds of family around them.
They say that a hotel in the West of Ireland
Is offering free meals and delivery to the housebound.
Today a young woman I know
is busy spreading fliers with her number
through the neighbourhood
So that the elders may have someone to call on.
Today Churches, Synagogues, Mosques and Temples
are preparing to welcome
and shelter the homeless, the sick, the weary
All over the world people are slowing down and reflecting
All over the world people are looking at their neighbours in a new way
All over the world people are waking up to a new reality
To how big we really are.
To how little control we really have.
To what really matters.
To Love.
So we pray and we remember that
Yes there is fear.
But there does not have to be hate.
Yes there is isolation.
But there does not have to be loneliness.
Yes there is panic buying.
But there does not have to be meanness.
Yes there is sickness.
But there does not have to be disease of the soul
Yes there is even death.
But there can always be a rebirth of love.
Wake to the choices you make as to how to live now.
Today, breathe.
Listen, behind the factory noises of your panic
The birds are singing again
The sky is clearing,
Spring is coming,
And we are always encompassed by Love.
Open the windows of your soul
And though you may not be able
to touch across the empty square,
Sing.

Dear God,
We answer the call to slow down and reflect
We look at our neighbours in a new way
We wake up to a new reality
To how big we really are.
To how little control we really have.
To what really matters.
We wake up to Love.
We pray and we remember that
Yes there is fear.
We wake to the choices we make as to how to live now.
Today, we breathe.
Behind the noise of any panic, we listen.
We know we are encompassed by your Love.
We open the windows of our soul
We sing.
We place the world in your hands and see it filled with Light.
Thank you that You are.
Amen
At the time of posting, responses to Covid 19 seemed to veer between 'It's no big deal, don't bother making an effort and DON'T feel fear' and 'be very afraid'.
With a history of 14 years bedbound with severe illness and inadequate care, I can tell you that the instruction 'DON'T feel fear' never worked for me.
I wish I had felt more fear early on, had welcomed it and let it teach me to slow down and be kind to my body.
So feel the fear people. It's a natural human emotion which serves the purpose of allowing us to behave in new ways.
Use fear to override old habits of face touching and hand shaking and learn new habits.
And once fear has empowered you to do what you can, then, to the best of your ability, let it go. You have no more need of it.
Find your confidence, your trust, feel the love you have for others.
You are alive. Celebrate it and live it.
We place the person we think of now in your loving arms.
We lift her/him to you in faith.
We ask to be a channel through which your abundant health reaches ________ now.
For these few moments, we set aside any disbelief. We set aside any fear.
We get out of the way and allow you to reach ______ through us.
Your words are HEALTH and LIFE.
We speak HEALTH and LIFE to _____'s body now.
Under your divine guidance their body knows how to restore itself to HEALTH.
In you all things are HEALTH. We call Your reality into the life of this person NOW.
We speak a shield of protection around this person, ourselves and all we love.
We see the same light of this shield around the whole world.
AMEN
Seeing the earth as one
where we can hug and touch again.
Let it be so.
For all medical workers, including pharmacists as well as porters, cleaners and admin.
If there is a moment when you have a thought of fear, I join minds with you that it will be replaced with a thought of blessing for the person in front of you.
I see these blessings as a shield of protection from any virus.
I (all those reading this) send blessings ahead of you now.
Your fear is cast out by a powerful presence of LOVE.
Seeing your hospital or surgery surrounded in LOVE.
Seeing you walking through this in HEALTH.
Thank you. Thank you.
You are blessed and a blessing.
AMEN

Dear God,
We pray for all those in a position to research the treatment for Covid-19 virus.
We don’t need to fear.
You are bigger and mightier than a tiny viral
cell.
Your name Jesus is more powerful.
You have overcome the world. We trust you.
Put the right people in the right place to find a vaccine and a cure.
Make connections that need to be made.
Guide the researchers' minds, hearts and hands.
Give them the financial reward they need to allow them to dedicate themselves to this work.
We see a clear and affordable vaccine being identified and made available quickly .
We see celebration at the progress made
and saving of many peoples lives especially in poorer countries.
Thank you. Amen
Veronica UK
Dear Lord, pour your grace on
researchers
and those in power
and grant them the spirit of generosity
so that their results and vaccine are available to all,
so that the
world may share in it,
not just individual wealthy countries or
profiteering individuals.
Amen
Praying that those with fatigue following the virus will have and will take the chance to rest and fully recover.
Praying for any necessary finances to be provided so that they can rest.
AMEN

Move to read Psalm 91 - a powerful prayer of protection. It includes the words:
And so, I am not afraid for the pestilence that walks in darkness.
